Physical Connections

  • Use a 3.5mm audio jack plugged into the laptop when using VGA for video. HDMI cables carry both audio and video signals automatically.

Here is a list of items to review when audio is not working in a classroom when trying to present.

Selected Inputs

  • Check either the SmartBox or Extron controller. The selected input (HDMI, VGA, Computer, etc.) should match the physical cable(s) you have connected to your device. Image showing the Main Controls page of an Extron Touch Panel classroom AV system controller.

SmartBox

  • When using a classroom equipped with a SmartBox, locate the lower left corner of the SmartBox and check the amplifier emergency-power-off switch. Sound Settings on Your Laptop

Windows 10

  • Click the Speaker Icon in the taskbar and choose the appropriate audio output.
  • Audio over HDMI connections will appear as Extron HDMI, ExtronScalerD, or the specific model number of the installed NEC Projector in the room.

  • Analog audio connections (when utilizing a VGA cable) will appear as your laptop's standard analog output.

Windows 11

  • Click the Speaker Icon in the taskbar, then click the audio output selection button (represented by an arrow) next to the volume slider, and choose the appropriate audio output.
  • Audio over HDMI connections will appear as Extron HDMI, ExtronScalerD, or the model number of the installed NEC Projector in the room.

  • Analog audio connections (when utilizing a VGA cable) will appear as your standard analog headphone/line-out device.

MacOS

  • Click the Control Center icon in the upper right corner of the menu bar, click on Sound, and select the appropriate audio output.
  • Audio over HDMI connections will appear as Extron HDMI, ExtronScalerD, or the model number of the installed NEC Projector in the room.
