The Geneseo Virtual Lab gives campus community members access to a cloud-hosted Windows desktop environment. This virtual machine comes pre-configured with a broad suite of licensed academic, mathematical, and productivity software packages.

- Navigate directly to go.geneseo.edu/PublicVirtualLab.
- Once authenticated, locate the Virtual Desktops header and click the computer icon labeled Public Virtual Lab.
- If an Access local resources security prompt appears, check the box for File transfer and click Allow.

- When prompted for your credentials, type in your full Geneseo email address and password.

Note: The virtual desktop window may remain black for up to 1 minute while your user profile and workspace build
Double-click any program shortcut on your virtual desktop to begin working.
⚠️ Data Loss Warning: Although files may temporarily persist between your connection cycles, you should always save or back up your active project assets to external cloud storage to prevent unexpected data loss.
Using OneDrive (Recommended)
Log into your campus Microsoft OneDrive instance inside the virtual desktop to directly open, edit, and save your work securely.
Uploading Files from Your Local Computer
- Click the Arrow icon located in the upper-right corner of the remote desktop browser window.

- Select the local file you want to transfer into your session.
- Inside the virtual lab, open the Windows File Explorer and click on This PC.
- Locate and open the drive labeled Remote Desktop Virtual Drive.

- Your transferred items will be inside the Uploads folder.
To safely close your environment, execute any of the following methods:
- Desktop Shortcut: Double-click the Log Off icon located directly on the virtual desktop.
- Start Menu: Right-click the Windows Start button in the bottom-left corner, hover over Shut down or sign out, and select Sign out or Disconnect.
- Portal Header: Click your name in the upper-right corner of the web client screen and select Sign Out.
- Browser: Close the active web browser tab or window.
The following software suites are pre-installed and ready for deployment:
- Data, Statistics & Analytics: Alteryx, Anaconda, Minitab, Microsoft Power BI, Python, RStudio, SPSS, TeamMate Analytics (Excel Plugin)
- Mathematics & Science: ArcGIS Desktop (via ArcMAP), ChemDraw, Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, SimuText
- Productivity & Specialized: Google Earth Pro, LogiCola, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Primary Audience: This platform architecture is funded and intended primarily for student academic use. Other members of the university community are welcome to utilize the system, but system availability and concurrent seat limits may be prioritized around student-centered constraints.
