This article walks Faculty through the different ways to communicate with their class.
We recommend that you use Picture Class Roster to extract student email addresses. They can then be pasted into your email client.
You can use this approach if you use an email client like Thunderbird or Mac Mail. You can also set up your browser to send email links to Gmail. Since this approach requires additional set up, we offer this as an alternative, but we do not recommend it as a first choice.
Faculty can send messages to their classes from myGeneseo. Department chairs and secretaries have the ability to email any class in the department to send announcements regarding class cancellations or changes.
-
Log into myGeneseo.
-
Do a search in the Sites Search Bar at the top of the page for “Class Roster”.
-
Select a term from the “All Terms” dropdown menu.
-
Click on subject.
-
Under “Summary Class list” select a student or all student by checking the checkbox to the left.
-
Then click on the email icon
-
Your computer will launch an email client (Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc.) to compose the message.
You can configure Chrome to send messages from myGeneseo through Gmail.
-
Go to http://gmail.geneseo.edu in Chrome and login.
-
When you open Gmail in Chrome, a Protocol Handler icon (double diamond) should appear to the left of the star (bookmarks) icon in the upper right hand corner of the URL bar.
* NOTE - If the double diamond icon isn't there, that means you have already set a default for your mail handler. See the 2nd Approach method below to check it, change it or reset it up.

-
Click the double diamond icon to show the following: Allow mail.google.com to open all email links?
-
Click on the circle next to "Allow". Then click on the Done button.
How to modify Protocol Handler settings after already setting it up (use to check what your default mail handler is and/or to change it).
-
Click on the Chrome Settings menu (the 3 vertical dots in the upper right hand corner of the browser toolbar).
-
Select Settings (Gear icon) - you may have to scroll down towards the bottom.
-
Then click on Privacy and security on the left.
-
Click on Site Settings.
-
Click on Additional Permissions.
-
Click on Protocol handlers.
-
Click on Sites can ask to handle protocols.
-
If you already have it set to use Gmail by default and want to remove it from automatically using Gmail in Chrome, click on the 3 dots to the right of "mail.google.com" and click Remove.
-
The double diamond should now appear at the top of your Gmail in the address bar at the top if you refresh the page.
- Click on the double diamond and click on Allow under Allow mail.google.com to open all email links.
-
Click on Done.
