Prerequisites (Do This First)

  • Turn on Bluetooth on your mobile device.
  • Have a second device (like a laptop or tablet) ready to use during this process.

Setup Instructions

  • Connect to eduroam 
    • On your smartphone or tablet, make sure your Wi-Fi is connected to the eduroam network.

  • Launch Google Home Setup 
    • Plug in your Google Home/Mini.
    • Open the Google Home App
      • Tap the "+" (Add) icon
      • Select "Set up device" then "New Devices"
      • Follow the prompts (confirming the audio jingle and setting a room location) until you hit the "Connect to Wi-Fi" page.

  • Extract the MAC Address 
    • When you reach the screen listing nearby Wi-Fi networks, stop.
    • Tap the 3 vertical dots located in the upper-right corner of the app screen.
    • Select "Show MAC address" from the drop-down menu.
    • Write down the 12-character MAC address that appears.

  • Register the Device
    • Leave the Google Home app open on that exact screen.
    • On your second device (laptop or tablet)
    • open a web browser and go to mydevices.geneseo.edu.
    • Log in with your standard Geneseo username and password.
    • Click "Add", enter your device details and the MAC address, and click "Submit".

  • Swap Phone to gPlay
    • On your smartphone, temporarily minimize the Google Home app.
    • Go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings, disconnect from eduroam, and manually connect your phone to the gPlay network.

  • Complete Setup on gPlay 
    • Return to the Google Home app.
    • On the Wi-Fi selection screen, select gPlay as the network for your smart speaker.
    • The device will now successfully connect and finish its configuration.

Troubleshooting Tip: Once the setup is completely finished, you can switch your smartphone back to eduroam for your normal campus browsing. The Google Home Mini will stay connected to gPlay in the background.
