Windows
There are currently have two kinds of college provided Windows computers:
-
Windows computers managed using only our cloud Mobile Device Management (MDM) system, Entra ID
-
Windows computers bound to Active Directory (AD)
The password change process is different depending on which of these computers you have. The easiest ways to tell are at the log in screen and in the Settings app.
Cloud-only Managed Machines
You can tell a device is managed by the cloud only if at the log in screen, you are asked to enter your email address to sign-in to your work or school account. You can also look in Settings under Accounts → Access work or school, and you should see a box that says “Connected by
-
Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys on your keyboard and select Change a password
-
Your default web browser will open and bring you to the My Sign-Ins Microsoft page with the password change box open
-
Follow the prompts to change your password
-
After changing your password, your computer will likely prompt you to sign-in again so that it has your updated password. If you were connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi, you will need to sign-in again with your new pasword
AD-Bound Machines
If you are off-campus, you must have an active VPN connection to use this method. Please see our VPN Self-Help guide to setup and connect to the VPN.
You can tell a device is AD bound if at the log in screen, you are asked to enter a “User name” and below the password field, there is text saying “Sign in to: GENESEO” and “How do I sign in to another domain?” You will also be able to sign-in using just the username portion of your email without the “@geneseo.edu” piece. You can also look in Settings under Accounts → Access work or school, and you should see a box that says “w2k.geneseo.edu” and “Connected to GENESEO AD domain”.
-
Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys on your keyboard and select "Change a password"
-
On the 'Change a password' dialog, fill out the fields then press Enter key on your keyboard or the → button
-
If completed successfully you will receive a message that your password was changed successfully
-
Optionally: restart your computer
