TopHat Brightspace Integration & Grades Sync

Linking Top Hat and Brightspace together gives you a ton of amazing features! Automatically sync grades, and keep your student roster up-to-date.

Before You Start

To ensure students do not have to pay for Top Hat, follow these instructions for each of your classes using Top Hat:

If your students accidentally pay for TopHat, we will not be able to facilitate a refund. Please be sure your courses are part of our campus licensing before inviting students or announcing TopHat to your classes.

Link a Brightspace Course to Top Hat

Follow these steps to connect a Top Hat course within your Brightspace course:

  1. Log in to Top Hat

    • Sign in to your Top Hat account.

  2. Open Your Brightspace Course

    • Navigate to the Brightspace course where you want to add the Top Hat link.

    • Open the module where you would like the link to appear.

  3. Select Existing Activities

    • Click Existing Activities at the top of the module.

  4. Choose External Learning Tools

    • From the drop-down menu, select External Learning Tools.

  5. Select Top Hat Course Launch

    • Scroll through the list and click Top Hat Course Launch.

  6. Connect Your Top Hat Course

    • You will be prompted to either:

      • Choose an existing Top Hat course to connect, or

      • Create a new Top Hat course and link it to Brightspace.

  7. Complete the Setup

    • Follow the on-screen prompts to finish linking the course.

    • Once complete, the Top Hat Course Launch link will appear in the selected Brightspace module.

Steps to Sync Your Roster

On-demand roster sync or manual roster sync can be used when you don't want to wait for the nightly roster sync to run. 

  1. View the list of courses in Top Hat and select the desired course. 

  2. Click on Settings for your course.

  3. Click on LTI 1.3 LMS SYNC.

  4. In the Roster Sync box, notice that your roster is automatically synced every day at 1:00 AM.

    1. To sync your roster now or view a student's course access status, go to the Student Manager (this will be a hyperlink from within your Top Hat course).

  5. Click on the blue "Sync Roster" button on the far right-hand side of the screen.

  6. After refreshing the tab the students will appear in the student list. You will also notice that the banner running across the top of your course now lists your last successful sync.

After these steps, the current roster will be enrolled in your TopHat course. Students who already have TopHat accounts will be automatically enrolled. You can easily send invitations to students who do not have accounts. Follow the link below to review the documentation for Advanced Brightspace Integration.
