Managing Users

Adding Geneseo (@geneseo.edu) Users

To grant another Geneseo user access to your WordPress site, follow these steps:

  1. Initial Login (Creates User Record): Ask the user to visit your site's login page (e.g., https://wp.geneseo.edu/your-site-name/wp-login.php) and click Sign in with CAS.

    • Note: They will receive a permission error. This is expected and necessary to register their account in the system.

  2. Add the User: Go to your WordPress Dashboard, navigate to Users, and select Add Existing.

  3. Assign Role: Enter the user's Geneseo email address, select their intended role, and click invite.

  4. Confirmation: The user will receive an email confirmation link. They must click this link to finalize their access.

Adding External (Non-Geneseo) Users

Site owners cannot directly add external email addresses. External accounts must be provisioned by CIT. Please submit a Services Request for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question Answer / Solution
How often are WordPress updates applied? WordPress is patched monthly, unless a critical security vulnerability requires an immediate emergency update.
Can I use a custom, non-Geneseo domain? (e.g., myblog.org) No. All campus-hosted sites must use a wp.geneseo.edu/sitename URL structure.
I broke a page! Can you restore an earlier version? You can restore it yourself! Use the built-in Revision History feature within the WordPress page editor.
Will CIT install a plugin I found? We are happy to evaluate it. A technical team from CIT, the Library, and Digital Communications reviews requests for compatibility and security. Submit a Services Request to start the review.
Can I install a custom theme? We are not adding new themes at this time. However, you can submit a Services Request to discuss your specific design needs.
Can CIT help migrate my external WP site to Geneseo? Currently, we cannot offer technical assistance with importing external WordPress sites.
Why does my iframe content disappear when I save? This is a known security restriction embedded within our campus multi-site network configuration.
How do I link to my new blog from another page? Simply paste your full URL (e.g., https://wp.geneseo.edu/naturewriting/) into a paragraph block. WordPress will automatically recognize and format it as a hyperlink.
