Site & Navigation Basics (FAQ)

What is the SharePoint Start Page?

Your SharePoint start page is a personal dashboard where you can find and access all sites and portals you have active permissions to. Think of the start page as your personal dashboard.

What is a SharePoint site? A dynamic web space dedicated to a specific objective or group framework.

What are the differences between communication and team sites? Communication sites are meant for wide audiences with few content authors (broad broadcasting), while Team sites focus on tighter internal operational collaboration.

What is a site collection? A grouping of related SharePoint sites that share common features and administration attributes.

How can I easily find or follow sites I have been given access to?

  • To find sites: From your SharePoint start page, type contentclass:STS_Site directly into the Search in SharePoint field. You can then bookmark these addresses in your browser.

  • To follow a site: Select the Star icon in the top right header of any site. This saves a shortcut directly into the Following section of your personal start page dashboard.

How do I view all background content on my site?

Click the Gear icon (Settings) \ Site contents in the top-right corner.  Subsites, Document libraries, and Lists (Calendars, Contact Lists) are listed here for transparent navigation.
