Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the capability of machines to execute tasks typically linked to human intelligence, including learning, reasoning, and problem-solving.

AI is a broad field of study that includes computer science, statistics, data analytics, and more.

AI systems enhance their capabilities by analyzing vast datasets to uncover patterns and relationships. They employ algorithms — structured sets of rules that direct the AI's decision-making process.

Approved and Restricted AI Tools

If you are interested in the possibilities of generative AI, try Microsoft Copilot AI on your laptop or mobile device. Copilot, fueled by technologies like GPT-4 and DALL-E, can use the hidden patterns in previously seen text and images to generate new human-sounding text or images in response to your questions and prompts.

Google Gemini is available to Geneseo account holders. While it does have data protection (and it is better than using a personal account), it has strict query limits that affect its usefulness. CIT is not recommending the app at this time for most use cases.

Some third‑party AI tools are restricted or prohibited on Geneseo‑managed devices due to data handling, privacy, or security concerns. DeepSeek AI is one example of a tool that SUNY has directed campuses not to use on college‑owned devices.

If you’re unsure whether an AI tool is allowed, Ask CIT before installing or using it.

    This document presents information and solutions to educators across the spectrum of enthusiasm and adoption interests, as we believe everyone should be empowered to make educated decisions for themselves and their students regarding generative AI. Perhaps the least effective response at this point is to pretend generative AI is not a part of the higher education experience. Thus, this document supports educators at all levels and disciplines; we are addressing the issue rather than engaging in avoidance.
