Accessibility Tips by Role

For Faculty

To ensure that all digital course content is accessible for students, the Strive for 85 campaign encourages instructors to aim for a course accessibility score of 85% or above. Find and fix inaccessible materials by following these steps:

  • Check your course’s accessibility score on your course home page in Brightspace.

  • Make documents accessible from the start using Word or PowerPoint, and pass the built-in accessibility checker before sharing. Avoid uploading PDFs as they take time to make accessible.

  • Have scanned pages of readings? Use SensusAccess in Brightspace (Course Tools > SensusAccess LTI) to convert them to Word or send them to CIT for remediation.

  • Have journal articles? Link to the article source instead of uploading the PDF.

  • Faculty do not need to provide an ebook version of all assigned printed texts. If a student with a disability requires an alternative format of a text, you may submit a purchase request and/or refer the student to the Office of Accessibility Services (access@geneseo.edu).

  • Schedule a consultation with Digital Accessibility Analyst, Anjali Shiyamsaran.
