Brightspace’s Respondus LockDown Browser secures exams by preventing students from accessing other websites, files, or apps until their quiz is submitted.
Instructors can manually enable specific exceptions, such as a calculator or a particular website.
The tool is compatible with Windows, macOS, iPads, and Chromebooks.
Before You Start
- If you have not used this tool before, you must download and install it prior to your first assessment.
- Please allow sufficient time for this, especially if it is the first quiz of a semester and/or you are working with students new to Brightspace.
Steps
-
Once you have created a quiz
-
Go into Course Tools
-
Choose Quizzes.
-
Click on the LockDown Browser tab.

-
The LockDown Browser tab appears.
-
You may be prompted with "Application Respondus v4.0 by Respondus Inc is trying to access your information. Would you like to proceed?"
-
Check the box so you're not prompted again for the Respondus application, then click or tap the Continue button.
-
Click on the menu icon to the left of the desired quiz and select Settings.

-
Select Require LockDown Browser for this exam.
-
Note on Proctoring
-
As you move to Step 4, you will see an option for "Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring)." Please note that SUNY Geneseo does not have a license for this feature.
-
Keep the default setting, "Don't require proctoring for this exam," selected to ensure your quiz functions correctly.
-
Once you have made this selection you will be given options to change Password Settings and Advanced Settings.
-
Make your selections and click Save + Close. You'll notice that the text "Requires Respondus LockDown Browser" has been appended to the title of your quiz.
