Spartan Student Installation Guide

Spartan Student is a molecular modeling package designed for chemistry education. By pairing Spartan’s intuitive graphical interface with robust computational engines, it delivers essential modeling tools tailored specifically for the organic chemistry curriculum.

 


Steps for macOS

  • Download SpartanStudentV903.dmg from software.geneseo.edu

  • Once the file finishes downloading, navigate to your downloads folder and open the .dmg

  • Drag Spartan Student V9 into your Applications folder.

  • Open Spartan Student from either Applications or Launchpad.

  • Click Accept to accept the license agreement. license agreement popup

  • Spartan Student will now open fully. A dialogue for licensing the software will pop up. Click Launch License Utility.

  • Select the radio button for Network, then click Next.  wavefunction license utility select licensing option popup window

  • Before the license server can be entered, the Sentinel Installer has to run.

    •  Click Next/Continue until you reach the license agreement page. Agree to the license.image of gemalto license agreement

      • A message will pop up saying that a System Extension has been blocked. Click Open System Preferences. 

      • Click the Lock and enter your administrator credentials.

      • Click Allow next to the blocked system extension.

      • Click the Lock and close System Preferences

  • Once the installation has finished, return to the Spartan installer and click Next. image of installer saying next
  • Enter spartanlic.geneseo.edu into the box for the license server. Click Next. The software should now be licensed and ready to use.

    • If Spartan says "A valid license was not found", try clicking Check License.

    • If that does not work, click Launch License Utility. Replace spartanlic.geneseo.edu with 137.238.2.85

    • If that still does not work, click Check License again. The software should find the license and become available for use.


Steps for Windows

  • Download SpartanStudentInstaller903.exe from software.geneseo.edu

  • Once the file finishes downloading, navigate to your downloads folder and double click on SpartanStudentInstaller903

  • If you are prompted with "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" click Yes

  • On the welcome screen click Next.

  • Read the license terms, then check the box to accept the license agreement, then click Next.

  • Click Install.

  • When the Wavefunction License Utility opens, select Network, then click Next.

  • On the welcome screen click Next.

  • Read the license agreement, then select the option to Accept the license agreement, then click Next.

  • Click Next.

  • The Sentinel installer will now run, click Finish when it completes.

  • When the Wavefunction License Utility opens again, type spartanlic.geneseo.edu into the License Server field, then click Next

  • When you see the notification "Successfully set server to "spartanlic.geneseo.edu" click Done

  • Click Next

  • Click Finish

  • Spartan Student is now installed.

  • If you launch Spartan and it says "A valid license was not found", open the License Utility by clicking Help in the upper right corner and selecting License Utility.

  • Replace spartanlic.geneseo.edu with 137.238.2.85

  • Then click Check License again. The software should find the license and become available for use.


Notes

  • Spartan will only be able to connect the license server if you have a working campus internet connection. If you are located off-campus, you must establish a VPN connection in order for Spartan to launch.

  • Spartan is not available on the Chromebook platform, if you need access from one of those devices please visit one of our public Windows lab and complete your work on a lab computer.

  • This license expires annually in the month of May.
