Working Remote - Security Considerations

Body

Working remotely introduces unique cybersecurity challenges.

Use this guide to ensure you are protecting institutional data, maintaining vigilance against scams, and handling hardware safely from home.

Table of Contents

Handling of Information

  • Device Restrictions: Confidential information should not be stored on personal devices, including personal computers, cellphones, or USB drives.

  • Dedicated Workspaces: Employees should avoid using shared (family) computers to perform work-related tasks.

  • Physical Document Disposal: Sensitive printed documents should not be placed in the garbage or recycling. Any sensitive information that is printed at home should be shredded when no longer needed or saved to be returned to campus.

Phishing, Malware, and Fraud Vigilance

  • Exploitation of Current Events: Scammers are using concerns about current events or recent tragedies to lure people into falling for phishing scams.

  • Login & Download Requests: Use caution and be wary of any emails or links requesting that you provide login information or download a program to view information.

  • Beyond Links and Attachments: Remember, phishing doesn’t always include a link or attachment.

  • Charity Donation Fraud: Thoroughly research any organizations claiming to be collecting money for charity before donating.

Caution with USB Drives

  • No Unencrypted Storage: Do not store sensitive or confidential information on unencrypted USB drives.

  • Malware Prevention: If you don’t know what other devices a USB drive has been plugged into, avoid using it with your work computer to prevent the transfer of malware.
