Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

Body

Use a VPN to access campus restricted resources like databases, websites, and specialized applications from off campus.

General Information & Required Services

What is a VPN?

At SUNY Geneseo, many essential information systems are globally open. However, some privileged operations are explicitly restricted to on-campus network access for asset security. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) establishes a secure, encrypted link tunnel from an external internet provider straight back onto the internal university framework, making off-campus computing identical to utilizing local campus wires.

When do I need to use the VPN?

The following systems are examples of campus-managed software assets that require an active secure VPN connection to access from off-campus networks:

  • Appworx Integration Suites
  • Banner Administrative Information Pages
  • EMS Desktop Client Schedulers
  • Internal University Library Databases
  • Local Network Campus Printer Routing Spools
  • Campus-Licensed Desktop Software Suite Packages (including: ArcGIS Desktop, Mathcad, MATLAB, Minitab, Spartan, SPSS, Vectorworks)
  • Xtender Document Management Platforms

  2. If it is not installed, open the Company Portal application and install the F5 Networks Big Edge Client software.
  3. Once installed, proceed to the configuration instructions below.

Off-Campus Installation (College & Personal Devices)

Follow these steps if you are configuring a personal device or installing the client on a campus device while away from the university network. Available to students, faculty, and staff.

macOS Client Setup

  1. Download the official macOS VPN client installation bundle.
  2. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the BIGIPMacEdgeClient-7270.zip archive to extract it.
  3. Open the newly extracted folder and double-click mac_edgesvpn.pkg to launch the system installer wizard.
  4. Click Open if prompted by operating system security settings, followed by Continue.
  5. Accept the default target installation paths, select Install, and authenticate using your local Mac administrator password.
  6. Once deployment finishes, select Close and choose Move to Trash to remove the temporary installation files.

Windows Client Setup

  1. Download the official Windows VPN client installation bundle.
  2. Open the downloaded executable file to launch the setup wizard interface.
  3. Select Next, click on Choose Setup Type, and select the Typical profile configuration option.
  4. Click Install to begin system integration.
  5. If a Windows User Account Control prompt appears asking "Do you want to allow the following program to install software on this computer?", select Yes.
  6. If an unrecognized application warning pops up stating "Windows protected your PC,"             image of windows protected your pc and offers to leave or get more info
  7. click the More info hyperlink and then select the Run Anyway toggle switch.
  8. Click Close to conclude the application installation setup wizard.
  9. Select the More info link to confirm that it is okay to run the installer by clicking on the "Run Anyway" button.
  10. Select Close to complete the VPN Client installation.

Making a VPN Connection

For optimal computer performance, connect to the VPN client only when accessing required resources, and close out the application when you are finished working.

  1. Launch the Client App:
    • macOS: Open the Geneseo VPN Client application from your standard local Applications directory folder.
    • Windows: Open the BIG-IP Edge Client software using the central Windows Search bar feature in the lower-left taskbar.
  2. Authentication: This client architecture uses university Single Sign-On. When prompted by Microsoft identity screens, enter your full Geneseo email credentials and complete your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) challenge query.
  3. Establish the Link: The desktop software client should execute an automated connection initialization string. If it does not, manually click the Connect command toggle button to mount network traffic rules.
  4. Disconnecting Safely:
    • macOS: Select the shield-shaped client interface widget nested in the top global device menu tray bar, and click Turn VPN Off.
    • Windows: Select the network connection interface status tray icon (styled to look like a small dark ethernet hardware jack), and click the Disconnect command button.

Troubleshooting & System Errors

macOS 13 (Ventura) Application Startup Error

When running the Geneseo VPN Client on macOS 13 (Ventura), the system may trigger a security notification falsely claiming that the software package asset application is corrupt and should be transferred immediately to the Trash. The application package is not damaged. If you cannot immediately update your macOS to a newer version, select the More info or override links to permit normal operations despite the gatekeeper alert box sequence.

Windows Stuck on "Initializing"

If your desktop client system remains locked at an "Initializing" validation loop indefinitely, your system software configuration may have corrupted the virtual WAN Miniport (IP) driver unit profile mapping. To patch this problem, cleanly purge and refresh the local hardware miniport interface profile settings by applying the manual network steps outlined in the official F5 Network Client Support Resource Guide, then restart your PC.

Windows Connection Fails Immediately Following Successful Deployment

If your client verification sequence crashes out instantly following a successful software build step, manually verify that the underlying machine connection dependencies are running:

  1. Press your Windows Key to open your command prompt lookups.
  2. Type services.msc into the open input prompt area and press Enter to launch the system administration portal window.
  3. Locate the Remote Access Connection Manager service file parameters profile index entry.
  4. Verify the processing path conditions state; if stopped, right-click the line option, choose Start, and retry your desktop VPN connection route.
